Le langage de l’autre monde, du Diable amoureux aux Frères Karamazov The Language of the Other World, from The Devil in Love to The Brothers Karamazov

Résumé

Quels que soient les canaux et les formes d’expression qu’emploie un être surnaturel, son langage ne prend sens qu’à travers la perspective humaine, dont la capacité — réelle ou supposée — à percevoir l’invisible confère au langage sa pertinence. En analysant l’évolution de ce langage à travers quatre œuvres emblématiques illustrant la vision de l’au-delà entre la fin du XVIIIᵉ et la fin du XIXᵉ siècle, cet article retrace le processus d’intériorisation progressive de la voix de l’être surnaturel, qui, perdant progressivement ses formes extérieures, s’introduit au sein de la psyché humaine. Ce processus s’inscrit dans le contexte des recherches scientifiques menées à la même époque.

Abstract

The language of a supernatural being, regardless of the channels or forms of expression it employs, acquires meaning only within a human perspective, whose capacity—real or presumed—to perceive the invisible makes such language meaningful. Through an analysis of the evolution of this language in four emblematic works reflecting changing conceptions of the other world from the late eighteenth to the late nineteenth century, this article traces the progressive internalization of the supernatural voice. Gradually shedding its external forms, this voice comes to inhabit the human psyche. This process unfolds within the broader context of contemporary scientific inquiry.
