Résumé

Tout en « inventant » la peau du caméléon en 1669, Claude Perrault s’inscrit dans une lignée d’auteurs qui, depuis l’Antiquité, ont fait de la « question naturelle » des changements chromatiques de la peau du caméléon un véritable sujet zoologique. Cette évocation topique, qui prend son origine dans le portrait zoologique d’Aristote, va s’étoffer au fil du temps et gagner en narrativité. En effet, le caméléon fait partie depuis l’Antiquité des mirabilia, ces prodiges de la nature qui suscitent l’étonnement et l’admiration. Mentionner le sentiment d’émerveillement que suscitent les changements chromatiques de sa peau constitue une composante essentielle de ce topos, qui repose sur l’apparition fugace du sujet observateur émerveillé au sein de la description zoologique. Le xvii ^e siècle représente pourtant un tournant dans l’écriture de la fascination pour un animal longtemps considéré comme fabuleux mais désormais délesté des légendes qui l’entouraient. Le merveilleux ne disparaît pas pour autant ; il change de nature, le merveilleux naturel se substituant au merveilleux surnaturel.

Abstract

By ‘inventing’ the chameleon’s skin in 1669, Claude Perrault joined a line of authors who, since Antiquity, have made the ‘natural question’ of chromatic changes in the chameleon’s skin a veritable zoological subject. This topical evocation, which has its origins in Aristotle’s zoological portrait, will develop over time and become more narrative. Since ancient times, the chameleon has been one of the mirabilia, the wonders of nature that arouse astonishment and admiration. Mentioning the sense of wonder aroused by the chromatic changes in its skin is an essential component of this topos, which is based on the fleeting appearance of the amazed observer within the zoological description. However, the seventeenth century represented a turning point in the writing of the fascination for an animal that had long been considered fabulous, but had now been stripped of the legends that surrounded it. The wonder did not disappear for all that, but its nature changed, with the natural wonder replacing the supernatural wonder.
