À quoi tient l’attachement des romanciers, ou en tout cas d’un grand nombre d’entre eux, à l’histoire et à la mémoire de leur art ? D’où vient qu’il traverse et souvent motive le vaste ensemble des commentaires qu’ils consacrent au roman ? Au tournant des xixe et xxe siècle, cet attachement renvoie aussi bien à la réussite du roman comme genre majeur de la littérature (réussite qui impose de trier et de tracer des chemins dans une production toujours plus abondante) qu’au fait que la mémoire du roman est plus fragile que celle des autres genres et des autres arts. Genre sans règles et sans modèle fixe, le roman exige, pour être reconnu, qu’on se souvienne de ce qu’il a été, effort qui nécessite plus de soin et d’attention dans un contexte de renouveau esthétique tel que l’a été, pendant toute sa durée, le xxe siècle. Mais l’attachement des romanciers à l’histoire et à la mémoire du roman tient aussi à ce que ce dernier a partie liée à l’expérience de la durée et de la transformation, que les récits qui sont les siens sont toujours, d’une façon ou d’une autre, des récits du temps qui s’écoule et fait son oeuvre.
Abstract
To what can we attribute the attachment of novelists—a good number of them in any case—to the history and memory of their art? Why does it traverse and often motivate the vast body of their comments on fiction? At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this attachment also referred to the novel’s success as the main literary genre (a success that called for selecting and tracing paths through a prodigious and ever-increasing output) and the reality that its memory today is more fragile than that of other genres and other arts. A genre without rules or a fixed model, fiction, to be recognized, insists that we recall what it has been—an effort that demands greater care and attention within a context of aesthetic renewal comparable to that of the twentieth century while it lasted. But another reason for novelists’ attachment to the history and memory of fiction is that it deals with the experience of duration and transformation. This means that its own narratives are always, in one way or another, narratives of time and change.
