Résumé
Comment comprendre le lien entre les sans-abris d’aujourd’hui et les vagabonds de la fin du xixe siècle aux États-Unis ? La figure du hobo, icône culturelle américaine, se construit au tournant du xxe siècle à travers une hybridation des écritures, au carrefour entre littérature, témoignage et sociologie. À travers un panorama des écrits de et sur les vagabonds, de Josiah Flynt à Jack Kerouac, en passant par Jack London et Nels Anderson, cet article cherche à analyser la manière dont le personnage du hobo est idéalisé, mythifié, s’éloignant progressivement aussi bien de la critique du capitalisme qu’il incarne à ses débuts que des réalités de la vie des personnes à la rue depuis les années 1970. À la « culture hobo » du début du xxe siècle, caractérisée par des lieux (la Hobohème analysée par Anderson), des pratiques et des engagements spécifiques, se substitue une image de l’individu — masculin, blanc, hétérosexuel — qui part sur la grand-route en quête d’aventure. Les déterminants sociologiques et économiques de la condition du vagabond sont mis de côté ; le romantisme du personnage du hobo lui ôte sa portée contestataire en même temps qu’il relègue les sans-abris contemporains au statut de victimes.

Abstract
What is the link between the homeless of today and the hobos of the end of the 19th century in the United States ? The hobo character, an American cultural icon, came into existence at the turn of the 20th century through the hybridization of different writing genres, at a crossroads between literature, testimonies and sociology. Through an overview of the writing by and on hobos, from Josiah Flynt to Jack Kerouac, including Jack London and Nels Anderson, this article seeks to analyze the way in which the hobo character was idealized, given a mythical status, and then gradually removed from the criticism of capitalism it embodied in its first years as well as from the actual living conditions of street people since the 1970s. The early 20th century “Hobo culture”, featuring places (Hobohemia analyzed by Anderson), practices and specific commitments is replaced by the figure of an individual—male, white, heterosexual—who goes on the road in search of adventure. The sociological and economic determinants of the hobo’s condition are set aside ; the romanticism of the hobo character negates his dissenting nature and at the same time confines today’s homeless people to the status of victims.

¿Cómo comprender el vínculo existente entre los destechados de hoy día y los vagabundos de finales del siglo xix en Estados Unidos ? La figura del hobo (vagabundo), icono cultural estadounidense, se construye a finales del siglo xx a través de una hibridación de las escrituras, en el cruce de caminos entre la literatura, los testimonios y la sociología. A través de un panorama de obras escritas acerca de los vagabundos, de Josiah Flynt a Jack Kerouac, pasando por Jack London y Nels Anderson, este artículo busca analizar la manera como el personaje del vagabundo es idealizado y mitificado, alejándose progresivamente tanto de la crítica del capitalismo que encarna en sus inicios, como de las realidades de la vida de las personas de la calle desde los años 1970. A la llamada “cultura hobo” de comienzos del siglo xx, caracterizada por lugares (la hobohemia, analizada por Anderson), prácticas y luchas específicas, la sustituye una imagen del individuo “masculino, blanco, heterosexual” que parte en búsqueda de aventuras. Las determinantes sociológicas y económicas de la condición del vagabundo se colocan a un lado. El romanticismo del personaje del vagabundo le transfiere su actitud anti-establecimiento, al mismo tiempo que relega a los destechados contemporáneos al estatus de víctimas.
