Résumé
En se référant à des exemples précis de théoriciens reconnus ou non de la sociologie du xixe au début du xxe siècle, et en prenant en compte les écrits de Georg Simmel quant à la détermination quantitative des groupes sociaux comme cadre théorique et point thématique de départ, cet essai considère la diversité des formes de connaissances qui caractérisent certains des textes fondateurs de la sociologie. Nous nous concentrons en particulier sur l’utilisation de tableaux statistiques, d’enquêtes, ou d’autres moyens de générer et de rendre compte d’une connaissance empirique au sein du travail de théoriciens sociaux classiques tels que Durkheim et Tarde, Marx et Engels, Max et Alfred Weber, ainsi que des données numériques sur lesquelles ils se sont appuyés ou qu’ils ont générées, cela incluant Quetelet, Kay-Shuttleworth et Du Bois. Nous conclurons en regardant en quoi un examen des méthodes empiriques et statistiques en sociologie classique nous aide à voir que le conflit entre les approches qualitatives et quantitatives qui divise la sociologie d’aujourd’hui est en grande partie dû à l’évolution ultérieure de la division disciplinaire du travail et d’une spécialisation professionnelle de la connaissance, un problème que les travaux de Simmel nous aident à exposer et à traiter.

Abstract
With reference to specific examples from canonical and non-canonical sociological writers from the 19th and early 20th century, and taking Georg Simmel’s insight into the quantitative determination of social groups as our theoretical frame and thematic point of departure, this essay considers the diversity of knowledge formats which characterize some of the founding texts of sociology. In particular, we focus on the use of statistical tables, surveys, and other ways of generating and displaying empirical knowledge in the work of classical social theorists such as Durkheim and Tarde, Marx and Engels, Max and Alfred Weber, along with the figures they drew upon or influenced, including Quetelet, Kay-Shuttleworth, and Du Bois. We conclude by considering how an examination of empirical and statistical methods in classical sociology helps us to see that the conflict between qualitative and quantitative approaches which divides sociology today is largely an effect of the subsequent development of the disciplinary division of labour and the professional specialization of knowledge, a problem which Simmel’s work helps us to expose and address.

Resumen
Este ensayo considera la diversidad de las formas del conocimiento que caracteriza a ciertos textos fundadores de la sociología, refiriéndose para ello a algunos ejemplos precisos de teóricos reconocidos, o no, de la sociología del siglo XIX, al inicio del siglo XX, y teniendo en cuenta los escritos de George Simmel en cuanto a la determinación cuantitativa de los grupos sociales como marco teórico y punto temático de partida. Nos concentramos en particular en la utilización de los cuadros estadísticos, las encuesta y otros medios para generar y dar cuenta de un conocimiento empírico en el seno del trabajo de teóricos sociales clásicos como Durkheim y Tarde, Marx y Engels, Max y Alfred Weber, así como de los datos numéricos en los cuales se apoyaron o que generaron, incluyendo Quetelet, Kay-Shuttleworth y Du Bois. Concluiremos observando en qué forma un examen de métodos empíricos y estadísticos en la sociología clásica nos ayuda a conocer que el conflicto entre los enfoques cualitativos y cuantitativos que divide la sociología actual se debe en gran parte a la evolución ulterior de la división disciplinaria del trabajo y una especialización profesional del conocimiento, un problema que los trabajos de Simmel nos ayudan a exponer y a tratar.
