Résumé

En 1906, Marcel Mauss publie, avec la collaboration d’Henri Beuchat, l’« Essai sur les variations saisonnières des sociétés Eskimos. Étude de morphologie sociale » dans L’Année sociologique. Pour beaucoup d’anthropologues, cet essai constitue la seule grande contribution à la théorie anthropologique fondée sur le cas des Inuit. Pourquoi Mauss a-t-il écrit cet essai, le seul dans toute son oeuvre consacré à un seul groupe humain ? Qui était Beuchat ? Qu’est-il devenu ? Comment Mauss avait-il fait le projet de venir au Canada, à l’invitation de Marius Barbeau, pour étudier les Amérindiens ? Autant de questions auxquelles l’auteur tente de répondre, sur un mode très personnel, en s’appuyant autant sur les archives du Collège de France que sur sa propre expérience de 50 années de recherches sur les Inuit du Nunavik et du Nunavut, et de rencontres avec les anciens élèves de Mauss. Il nous montre l’éclatement et l’éparpillement de l’héritage intellectuel de Mauss en ce qui concerne la recherche inuite et comment, c’est du Québec qu’à partir des années 1970 est venue une nouvelle impulsion.

Summary

In 1906, Marcel Mauss, in collaboration with Henri Beuchat, pubished his “Essay on the Seasonal Variation of Eskimo Societies. Study of Social Morphology” in L’Année sociologique. For many anthropologists this essay constitutes the only major contribution to anthropological theory based on the case of the Inuit. Why did Mauss write this essay, the only one in his whole work devoted to a single human group ? Who was Beuchat ? What happened to him ? How did Mauss accomplish the project of coming to Canada, at Marius Barbeau’s invitation, to study the Amerindians ? These are all questions the author tries to answer in a very personal way by relying on the archives of the Collège de France as well as on his own fifty year-long experience of research on the Inuit of Nunavik and Nunavut, and meetings with Mauss’s former students. He shows us the break-down and dispersal of Mauss’s intellectual heritage as regards Inuit research and how, in Quebec, starting in the 1970s, a new interest has developed.

Estudio de morfología social » en l’Année sociologique. Para muchos antropólogos este ensayo constituye la única gran contribución a la teoría antropológica basada en el caso de los Inuit. ¿Por qué Mauss escribe este ensayo, el único en toda su obra consagrada a un solo grupo humano? ¿Quién era Beuchat? ¿En qué se ha convertido? ¿Cómo Mauss había hecho el proyecto de venir a Canadá, a la invitación de Marius Barbeau, para estudiar los Amerindios? Tantas preguntas a las cuales el autor intenta responder, con un método muy personal, apoyándose tanto sobre los archivos del Colegio de Francia que sobre su propia experiencia de cincuenta años de investigaciones sobre los Inuit de Nunavik y Nunavut, y de encuentros con los antiguos alumnos de Mauss. Nos muestra la fragmentación y la dispersión de la herencia intelectual de Mauss en lo que se refiere a la investigación Inuit y cómo, es de Quebec, que a partir de los años sesenta ha vuelto un nuevo impulso.
