L’atelier et l’exposition, deux espaces en tension entre l’origine et la diffusion de l’oeuvre The Studio and the Exhibition : Two Spaces of Tension Between the Origin and the Dissemination of Art Work

Résumé

Cet article présente une partie des résultats d’une étude sur les transformations de l’atelier d’artiste. L’atelier demeure le lieu multifonctionnel de la pratique artistique jusqu’au milieu du xix^e siècle. Son rôle change lorsque l’exacerbation de l’exposition lui retire sa fonction de diffusion, celle-ci s’effectuant désormais dans la galerie ou le musée. Devenu alors le lieu d’origine de l’oeuvre, l’atelier induit une pratique artistique particulière, la production d’objets entreposés dans cet espace de création fixe, qui seront ensuite choisis et manipulés par des acteurs autres que l’artiste, pour sortir du domaine privé. Au cours des années 1970, des artistes remettent en question les contraintes du lieu de création en pratiquant un art in situ, ce qui transforme l’atelier en un moment immatériel du processus de création et réintroduit l’artiste comme médiateur actif de la diffusion de son oeuvre.

Summary

This article presents some results from a study on the transformations of the artist’s studio. The studio remained a multifunctional place for artistic practice until the middle of the 19th century. Its role changed when an increased emphasis on art exhibition, meant that galleries and museums took over the dissemination function formerly fulfilled by the studio. The studio as the place of origin of artwork engenders a particular artistic practice, namely the production of objects in a fixed creation space that are subsequently chosen and manipulated by actors other than the artist him/herself, taking them out of the private domain. During the 1970 s, some artists questioned the constraints of the creation space by creating art in situ, a practice which transforms the studio into an immaterial moment in the process of creation and re-introduces the actor as an active mediator in the dissemination of his/her work.

Este artículo presenta una parte de los resultados de un estudio sobre las transformaciones del taller de artista. El taller reside como el lugar multifuncional de la práctica artística hasta la mitad del siglo xix. Su rol cambia cuando la exarcebación de la exposición le retira su función de difusión, efectuándose ésta de ahora en adelante en la galería o el museo. Convertido entonces en el lugar de origen de la obra, el taller incita a una práctica artística particular, la producción de objetos que se almacenan en este espacio de creación fija, y que serán a continuación escogidos y manipulados por actores otros que el artista, para salir del dominio privado. En el curso de los años 1970, artistas ponen de nuevo en cuestión las limitaciones del lugar de creación practicando un arte in situ, lo que transforma el taller en un momento inmaterial del proceso de creación y reintroduce al artista como mediador activo de la difusión de su obra.
