This is an extended review essay which examines contributions of recent labour history to the history of Canadian technology. It argues that three recent books: Heron's Working in Steel, Sager's Seafaring Labour, and Parr's Gender of Breadwinners have bridged the longstanding gap between the two sub-disciplines. The review suggests some future directions for a more 'complete' history of technology which incorporates both the social and technical aspects of production.

Cet essai critique examine trois contributions récentes de l’histoire du travail à l’histoire de la technologie canadienne : Working in Steel de Heron, Seafaring Labour de Sager et Gender of Breadwinners de Parr. Ces ouvrages comblent le fossé qui existait entre deux sous-disciplines. Nous suggérons également diverses pistes de recherche pour une éventuelle histoire « complète » de la technologie qui incluerait tant les aspects sociaux que techniques de la production.

Dans cet article, l’auteur montre comment la création de l’Ecole polytechnique de Montréal, en 1873, va susciter l’émergence d’une nouvelle génération d’ingénieurs dont l’ésprit de corps les amène à se regrouper et à se construire une indentité qui les a différenciés socialement. L’auteur analyse alors les conditions socio-économiques et institutionnelles qui ont rendu possible l’ascension de ce nouveau groupe social au Québec, les ingénieurs francophones.

The author shows in this article how the formation of the Ecole polytechnique de Montréal in 1873 allowed for the emergence of a new generation of engineers whose esprit de corps led them to organize themselves and to create for themselves an identity which distinguished them in a social sense. The author analyzes the socio-economic and institutional conditions which gave rise to the francophone engineers, a new social group in Québec.

Recently published letters of Dr Karl A. Clark, who worked from 1920 to 1949 on the hot water separation process for extracting petroleum from the Athabasca oil sands, and records of Dr Clara W. Fritz, who, in the 1930s, examined the problem of pulp mill slime which weakened and discoloured paper products offer insights into how Canadian scientists worked in an international network of scientists. What were the roles played by these scientists in managing the international flow of scientific knowledge? How did they work? Who were their contacts? What were the institutional foci of their work? In answering these questions, we will come to a better understanding of the Canadian scientific infrastructure during this crucial period.

La publication de lettres du Dr. Karl A. Clark, qui travailla de 1920 à 1949 à la mise au point du procédé de séparation à l’eau chaude utilisé pour l’extraction du pétrole de sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca, de même que les archives du Dr. Clara W. Fritz qui, dans les années 1930 étudia le problème des boues des moulins à papier qui affaiblissaient et décoloraient les papiers, permettent de jeter un regard neuf sur la manière dont les scientifiques canadiens s’inséraient dans un réseau scientifique international. Quels furent les rôles joués par ces scientifiques dans la circulation de l’information ? Comment travaillaient-ils ? Quels étaient leurs contacts à l’étranger ? Dans quel cadre institutionnel oeuvraient-ils ? La réponse à ces questions permettra de mieux comprendre le potentiel et les limites de l’infrastructure canadienne au cours de l’entre-deux-guerres.

This article describes the nature of the 'Steel Project' being undertaken by the Beaton Institute in Cape Breton. Using a phenomenological approach, researchers attempt to understand the nature of steelmaking technology and workers' particular part in it through interviews and other documentation. Examples of this approach are provided.

Cet article décrit le « Projet acier » mis sur pied par le Beaton Institute du Cap Breton. Inspiré d’un point de vue phénoménologique, ce travail vise à comprendre la nature de la technologie de fabrication de l’acier et de la place des travailleurs dans ce processus. L’analyse se fonde sur des entrevues et d’autre sources documentaires.
