Abstract
Despite a rich and diversified literature, the study of French‑Canadian emigration to the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries still has many grey zones. In this article, we examine one of these zones namely, the composition of this emigration, by combining data available for the place of departure and the place of arrival. We begin by drawing on a dictionary of French‑Canadian surnames that we apply to the 1850 and 1880 U.S. censuses, and on the complete microdata file from the 1910 census, to create a portrait of French‑Canadian migrants to the United States. We then link these data with Quebec marriages. Analysis of the linked data reveals that the emigration spread from southwestern Quebec towards eastern regions of the province and shows the existence of privileged corridors between regions and certain American states. Farmers are not overrepresented among migrants, but skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers are in some regions. These results shed new light on the reasons behind this massive exodus.
