Résumé
Les politiques publiques concernant le vieillissement ont toutes pour objectif le maintien à domicile du plus grand nombre de personnes vieillissantes. Comment vieillir chez-soi, dans un quartier central montréalais, si l’on est victime d’éviction ou de reprise de logement? Cet article explore les dynamiques et réalités entourant la précarité résidentielle chez des locataires âgés à faible revenu, participant de près ou de loin aux activités d’un comité de logement et résidant dans l’un de quatre quartiers centraux montréalais en gentrification (Villeray, La Petite-Patrie, Rosemont et le Plateau-Mont-Royal). À partir d’une étude de terrain réalisée dans le cadre d’une thèse en études urbaines menée à l’INRS-UCS, cette contribution démontre l’importance de prendre en compte la relation locative en tant que facteur influençant la précarité résidentielle et, conséquemment, la capacité au maintien dans les lieux des personnes vieillissantes.

Abstract
Public policies on aging all aim to keep as many aging people as possible at home. How can one age in one’s own home, in a central Montreal neighbourhood, if one is a victim of eviction or repossession? This article explores the dynamics and realities surrounding residential precariousness among low-income elderly tenants who participate in some way in the activities of a housing committee and who reside in one of four gentrifying central Montreal neighbourhoods (Villeray, La Petite-Patrie, Rosemont and Plateau-Mont-Royal). Based on a field study conducted as part of a thesis in urban studies at INRS-UCS, this contribution demonstrates the importance of taking into account the rental relationship as a factor influencing residential precariousness and, consequently, the ability of aging people to remain in their homes.
