Résumé
Le développement et les caractéristiques de la gouvernance des banlieues cossues de la région de Montréal sont analysés ici à partir des cas de Westmount et Pointe-Claire. La façon dont leur territoire a été constitué en municipalité, les pratiques électorales qui s’y sont développées et les principaux acteurs qui participent à leur gouvernance entre la fin du 19e siècle et le début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, révèlent qu’elles sont le théâtre d’un mode de gouvernance distinct, propre aux banlieues bourgeoises et adapté aux besoins et aux intérêts de leurs habitants.

Abstract
This article concerns the development and characteristics of the governance of affluent suburbs of the Montreal region, taking Westmount and Pointe-Claire as case studies. The way in which their territories became municipalities, the electoral practices that developed there and the main actors participating in their governance from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the Second World War show that they are the site of a distinct mode of governance that is unique to middle-class suburbs and that is adapted to the needs and interests of their inhabitants.
