Résumé
Cet article relie la signification du suicide, telle qu’elle se donne à penser à travers des cas concrets, dans le cadre d’une enquête qualitative, à celle que révèle la statistique globale. L’auteur tente de comprendre comment des centaines de suicides accomplis séparément par des personnes qui ne se connaissent pas finissent par aboutir à une physionomie sociale si reconnaissable, s’apparentant à une signature collective. Il propose d’appréhender le suicide comme meurtre d’une identité. Cette notion est étayée sur la base de considérations théoriques et épistémologiques pour être ensuite illustrée à partir du matériau rassemblé dans le travail de terrain. Il ressort des résultats préliminaires qui sont présentés que le suicide met en actes des passions où s’expriment, explicitement, des conduites pathologiques dont on peut distinguer deux types : une identité masculine pathologique et une haine de soi qui révèle l’anomie potentielle à une adolescence sans terminaison. En conclusion, l’auteur remonte jusqu’aux causes sociales que révèlent ces conduites.
Abstract
The paper by Daniel Dagenais aims to link the meaning of suicide, as seen through concrete cases in the framework of a qualitative study, with that which is revealed by the overall statistics. The author seeks to understand how hundreds of suicides committed separately, by individuals who do not know one another, end up taking on such a recognizable social pattern, resembling a collective signature. He proposes that suicide be looked upon as the murder of an identity. This concept is supported by theoretical and epistemological considerations and is then illustrated using material gathered in the course of field work. This leads to preliminary results showing that suicide brings into play passions through which two identifiable types of pathological conduct are explicitly expressed: a pathological masculine identity, and a self-hatred that reveals the potential anatomy of an unending adolescence. In conclusion, the author seeks to trace the social causes revealed by these behaviours.
