Quelques décennies après la Conquête, les observateurs étrangers notaient que les Canadiens français faisaient usage d'un grand nombre d'anglicismes. Au milieu du XIXe siècle, commence au Québec la lutte contre l'« anglicisation » du français. Une étude des chroniques de langage parues dans la presse entre 1879 et 1970 montre que ceux qui mènent ce combat perçoivent F« anglicisation » comme un symptôme de la faiblesse de la nation canadienne-française, aussi le rejet en est-il violent. Tout au long de cette période, on passe progressivement des appels à l'effort individuel aux incitations à l'action collective en vue d'y mettre un terme.
Abstract
A few decades after the British conquest, foreign observers noticed that the French Canadians were using a large number of anglicisms. The mid nineteenth century saw the beginning of the war on «anglicisation» of French in Québec. A study of columns on language, printed between 1879 and 1970, shows that those who led this action viewed « anglicisation » as a symptom of the weakness of French-Canadian nation, and thus it was violently opposed. Throughout that period, people were called on to make an effort, first on an individual basis and then more and more on a collective one, to put an end to the problem.
