Résumé
Cet article explore la relation entre le pouvoir et la production du savoir sous l’angle de la « corporatisation » de l’enseignement supérieur, particulièrement en ce qui concerne les contributions de l’industrie minière aux universités canadiennes. Au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années, le Canada est devenu un acteur majeur du secteur minier mondial, secteur qui est également le théâtre de vives controverses et de débats de politiques. C’est dans ce contexte que les entreprises minières ont effectué d’importantes donations aux universités canadiennes. Cet article recense ces « dons » et questionne les impacts de la philanthropie minière sur la production du savoir et sur les rapports de pouvoir à l’oeuvre dans le secteur minier. Il argumente que l’impact de ces dons sur la liberté académique doit nécessairement être considéré à la lumière du rôle joué par la production du savoir dans la dynamique de régulation et de légitimation propre au secteur minier mondial à l’heure actuelle.
Abstract
This article explores the relationship between power and knowledge production in the context of the “corporatization” of higher education, with particular attention paid to the contributions of mining companies to Canadian universities. Over the past twenty-five years, Canada has become a major player in the global mining sector, a sector which is also the subject of much controversy and policy debate. It is in this context that mining companies have made significant donations to Canadian universities. This article examines these “gifts” and questions the impacts of mining philanthropy on knowledge production and on the power dynamics at work in the mining sector. It argues that the impacts of mining philanthropy on academic freedom must be understood in light of the role played by knowledge production in the regulation and legitimation processes that are specific to the global mining sector today.
