Leveraging Art to Support Refugee Newcomer Families’ Well-Being: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

There has been a shift toward resettlement in smaller cities, creating potential new challenges, and opportunities, in supporting refugee families. This study used interviews and participant observation to explore health and social impacts of a settlement services–run arts-based therapy group for newcomer families in a small city. A social-ecological approach exploring how the program operated as a third space highlighted potential pathways for supporting newcomer families’ well-being across multiple levels. As a study exploring the intersection of refugee settlement, organizational programming, and well-being, this article contributes to a greater understanding of newcomer supports within a smaller city context.

Résumé

On observe une tendance à la réinstallation dans des villes plus petites, ce qui peut mener à de nouveaux défis et des occasions potentielles dans le soutien aux familles de réfugiés. Au moyen d’entretiens et d’observations participantes, cette étude explore les répercussions sur la santé et le plan social d’un groupe de thérapie par l’art organisé par les services d’établissement pour les familles de nouveaux arrivants dans une petite ville. Une approche socioécologique qui examine le fonctionnement du programme en tant que troisième espace a mis en évidence des pistes potentielles pour favoriser le bien-être des familles nouvellement arrivées à plusieurs niveaux. En tant qu’étude portant sur l’intersection entre l’établissement de personnes réfugiées, la programmation organisationnelle et le bien-être, cet article contribue à une meilleure compréhension des mesures de soutien aux nouveaux arrivants dans le contexte d’une petite ville.
