Abstract
This descriptive article focuses on the effect of the pandemic on the mental health, coping strategies and drug and alcohol use of students enrolled in a Francophone post-secondary program in a linguistic minority context in Manitoba. A survey was administered in November 2018 and in November 2020. Results reveal that the mental health status of the student population has deteriorated during the pandemic, with a significant proportion of respondents reporting being depressed, deprived of sleep and experiencing anxiety often or all the time. Although many adopted healthy lifestyle habits, a significant proportion had taken prescription medication and few had used counseling services. Alcohol use and binge drinking during the past month decreased during the pandemic, whereas cannabis use remained constant. Frequency of alcohol use, binge drinking, energy drink and cannabis consumption was greater for males, especially those of the 2020 cohort. Promotion of good practices to achieve and maintain wellness is of particular importance in post-secondary settings, which are ideal settings for such initiatives.
