Résumé
En 1937, Ronald Coase (prix de la Banque de Suède en sciences économiques en mémoire d’Alfred Nobel, 1991) écrit un article retentissant sur « la nature de la firme ». Celle-ci se caractérise par une coordination hiérarchique alternative à la coordination par les prix et donc par un autre type d’allocation des ressources que celui résultant des « transactions d’échange ». Ce coup de tonnerre dans la théorie économique de l’époque, qui réduit l’économie réelle aux seuls phénomènes d’échange entre unités, va donner lieu à une nouvelle branche de la théorie économique, dite néo-institutionnelle, illustrée notamment par les travaux d’Oliver Williamson (prix Nobel d’économie, 2009). Or, que la firme soit un lieu de répartition des ressources par le propriétaire et non un marché de « facteurs de production » est une des thèses principales de Proudhon dans sa critique de la propriété capitaliste. Le problème de notre socialiste n’était pas le salaire comme résultat d’un échange, mais le salaire comme résultat d’une répartition, décidée par le propriétaire capitaliste. Si Coase a mis en évidence l’alternative entre coûts de transaction et coûts d’organisation pour expliquer l’existence des firmes, il reste à justifier de l’efficience du mode capitaliste de propriété de la firme comparé aux modes non lucratifs.
Abstract
In 1937, Ronald Coase (Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 1991) wrote a sensational article on the nature of the firm, which is characterized by coordination by hierarchy instead of coordination by prices and thus another kind of allocation of resources than what results from market transactions. This ground breaking work in economics at the time, which reduced the real world economy to solely market transactions among agents, gave birth to a new branch of economic theory, the so-called neo-institutionalists, illustrated in particular by the work of Oliver Williamson (“Nobel Prize in Economics” in 2009). However, the idea of the firm as a place where resources are allocated by the owner rather than a market of factors of production was one of Proudhon’s main arguments in his critique of capitalist ownership. The issue for our socialist was not the wage as a result of a market transaction but the wage as the result of an allocation decided by the capitalist owner. While Coase highlighted the trade-off between transaction costs and management costs to explain the existence of firms, the greater efficiency of the capitalist form of firm ownership compared with nonprofit forms remains to be demonstrated.
