Blasco Ibáñez y la mujer estadounidense. Consideraciones sobre La reina Calafia, un nuevo prototipo femenino en la narrativa del autor

Resumen

Este artículo analiza cómo el encuentro de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez con las mujeres estadounidenses le llevó a desarrollar un nuevo arquetipo femenino en sus obras. En 1919-1920 Blasco visitó los Estados Unidos, donde había logrado éxito y fama. Argumento que la independencia de las mujeres estadounidenses, que al principio le pareció indignante, lo llevó a reconsiderar el papel de la mujer en su escritura. Antes, sus personajes femeninos se ajustaban a los estereotipos de esposa devota o mujer fatal. En obras posteriores, como la novela La reina Calafia, exploró la representación de un nuevo modelo de mujer moderna.

Abstract

This article argues that Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s encounter with American women led him to develop new female character types in his novels. Blasco Ibáñez achieved great success in the U.S., where he traveled extensively in 1919-20 promoting his work. I argue that the independence of the American women he met, which at first he found outrageous, led him to rethink the role of women in his writing. Prior to this, his female characters conformed to the stereotypes of the devoted wife or the femme fatale. In subsequent works, such as the novel La reina Calafia, he explored representing a new kind of modern woman.
