Abstract
A new critical approach to the evaluation of mediaeval Roman mosaics and paintings is outlined. Beginning with a review of the modern consideration of the celebrated absidal mosaic in Santi Cosma e Damiano, issues of iconography, stylistic language and artistic identity are discussed concerning well-known decorative examples from the 6th to the late 13th century in Rome. Emphasis is placed on the 13th century and especially on Torriti’s mosaics in Santa Maria Maggiore and San Giovanni in Laterano, and on Cavallini’s rapport with the Master of Isaac.

Une nouvelle approche méthodologique de l’analyse des mosaïques et des fresques médiévales à Rome est présentée. L’auteur commente la position actuelle des spécialistes concernant la célèbre mosaïque absidiale de l’église des Saints Cosme et Damien, et il aborde ensuite des questions sur l’iconographie, le langage stylistique et l’identité artistique de plusieurs exemples célèbres de cycles décoratifs romains du 6e au 13e siècle, en apportant une attention particulière aux mosaïques de Torriti à Santa Maria Maggiore et San Giovanni in Laterano, et à la corrélation de Cavallini avec le Maître d’Isaac.
