Résumé
Ces deux entrevues nous présentent deux résidants du vingtième siècle à l’Île d’Orléans. Tous deux Gaulin, sans lien de parenté sinon par leur rattachement à l’ancêtre François (vers 1651). D’abord, Daniel Gaulin (1905-1989), l’habitant qui tint feu et lieu à Saint-Jean et qui nous parle du marché en ville avant le pont, des rites mortuaires de l’époque, de l’arrivée de l’électrification sur l’Île et de la mutation subtile opérée sur la vie paysanne. Quant au docteur Robert Gaulin (1905-1987), qui vint « exercer » en la paroisse de l’Ancêtre, Sainte-Famille, il illustre l’efficacité de la première ligne de la médecine d’alors, accordant priorité aux nombreux accouchements, comptant sur le temps comme facteur de guérison, où l’hôpital était le lieu de maladies ciblées et souvent mortelles.
Abstract
These interviews present two twentieth century residents of Île d’Orléans. Both are named Gaulin, although their only family connection dates back to the arrival, circa 1651, of their common ancestor, François. First comes Daniel Gaulin (1905-1989), a longtime inhabitant of the village of Saint-Jean, who tells of trips to the market in Québec City before the construction of the island bridge, of mortuary rituals in the past and finally of the subtle changes brought about in rural life due to the arrival of electricity. The testimony of Doctor Robert Gaulin (1905-1987), who chose to practice his profession in his family’s ancestral parish of Sainte-Famille, illustrates the efficient role doctors played as front-line workers, at a time when they prioritized attending to an abundance of childbirths. It shows how time was considered an important healing factor, while hospitalization was reserved for specific, often fatal, diseases.
