Résumé
Le loup-garou est le personnage central d’un mouvement de poésie francophone contemporaine en Louisiane, un symbole des tensions de marginalité pour des poètes d’héritages variés. Ces écrivains présentent un lycanthrope classique : une personne qui se transforme en loup. Or, dans la littérature ethnographique louisianaise, le loup-garou paraît le plus souvent comme un chien, un animal chimère ou un fantôme. Les études cataloguant cette croyance populaire sont rares. D’autres sources non scientifiques indiquent l’existence de légendes concernant des loups. La forme du loup-garou littéraire diffère de celle du personnage folklorique, mais certains éléments de la tradition orale persistent dans la poésie.
Abstract
The werewolf is the central character in a contemporary francophone poetry movement in Louisiana and is a symbol for marginality and ethnic tensions among poets of varied heritages. These writers present a classic lycanthrope, someone who is transformed into a wolf. Yet, in Louisiana-produced ethnographic studies, the werewolf or loup-garou usually appears as a dog, as a chimeric animal or as a ghost. There is little available in the way of literature cataloging this folk belief, though other non-academic sources indicate the existence of legends about wolves. The poetic creature’s appearance may differ from that of the folkloric one, however some elements of oral tradition remain in the existing poetry.
