Abstract
Family reunification, which refers to the return of a child placed in out-of-home care to his family of origin, is not always a guarantee of stability. In Quebec, re-placement occurs in 61% of cases (Hélie et al., 2020). The failure of reunification can have significant consequences for the child, who may experience another relational rupture and various disruptions. This qualitative study aims to identify, from the perspective of youth protection workers, the factors that may positively or negatively influence the family reunification process, i.e. during placement, at the time of reunification, and in the months that follow the return home. Focus group interviews were conducted with youth protection professionals (n = 13) in an urban region of Quebec. The data analysis was grounded in the principles of thematic analysis. The analysis of the professionals’ responses revealed the critical role of parental engagement in the reunification process, which is further associated with three main themes: relational characteristics, parental characteristics, and organizational characteristics of youth protection services. The findings underscore the interconnection between these factors and their impact on parental engagement, both with the services offered and with the child.
