Abstract
This study aims to identify students’ main difficulties when translating (semi-)specialised texts on the basis of an error-annotated English-French learner translation corpus. Students are M1 students in a translation training programme. The corpus contains two textual genres, namely research articles and popularisation articles. We use the same translation error annotation scheme for both text types as well as a corpus-based analysis. We then aim to identify and compare the difficulties students encounter based on genres and register. The results show that the translations of popularisation texts contain more content transfer errors, which may be due to students’ tendency to take more risks when translating these, as they may feel more confident. They also show that the translations of popularisation texts contain fewer terminology errors, most probably due to lower terminological density which characterises this type of text. However, our study also shows that these differences prove to not be statistically significant, which implies that content transfer errors and terminology errors are as important in specialised as in popularisation articles translations.

Résumé
Cette étude vise à identifier les principales difficultés des étudiants lors de la traduction de textes (semi-)spécialisés en partant de l’analyse d’erreurs de traduction dans un corpus d’apprenants de la traduction anglais-français. Les apprenants sont des étudiants de M1 en traduction spécialisée. Le corpus comprend deux genres textuels – des articles scientifiques et des articles de vulgarisation. En utilisant le même schéma d’annotation des erreurs de traduction, et une analyse en corpus, nous observons et comparons les difficultés rencontrées par les étudiants en fonction des genres et des registres. Les résultats ont montré que les traductions de textes de vulgarisation contiennent plus d’erreurs de transfert de contenu, ce qui peut être dû à la tendance des étudiants à prendre plus de risques lorsqu’ils traduisent ces textes, car ils se sentent plus confiants. Ils ont également montré que les traductions de textes de vulgarisation contiennent moins d’erreurs de terminologie, très probablement en raison de la plus faible densité terminologique qui caractérise ce type de texte. Néanmoins, notre étude montre aussi, de manière intéressante, que ces différences s’avèrent ne pas être statistiquement significatives, ce qui implique que les erreurs de transfert de contenu et les erreurs de terminologie sont toutes deux aussi importantes dans les traductions d’articles spécialisés et de vulgarisation.

Resumen
El objetivo de este estudio es identificar las principales dificultades de los estudiantes a la hora de traducir textos (semi)-especializados a partir del análisis de errores de un corpus de estudiantes aprendices en traducción inglés-francés. El corpus incluye dos géneros textuales: artículos científicos y artículos de divulgación. Al utilizar el mismo esquema de anotación de errores de traducción y el análisis basado en el corpus, pretendemos observar y comparar las dificultades que encuentran los estudiantes en función de los géneros y el registro. Los resultados mostraron que las traducciones de textos de divulgación contienen más errores de transferencia de contenido, lo que puede deberse a la tendencia de los estudiantes a arriesgarse más al traducirlos, ya que se sienten más seguros. También mostraron que las traducciones de textos de divulgación contienen menos errores terminológicos, muy probablemente debido a la menor densidad terminológica que caracteriza a este tipo de textos. Estas diferencias no resultaron ser estadísticamente significativas, lo que significa que tanto los errores de transferencia de contenido como los de terminología son igual de importantes en las traducciones de artículos especializados y de divulgación.
