Abstract
The VOCAL (VOiCe-over and lAnguage Learning) Innovation Project is aimed at assessing the potential didactic benefits of using the audiovisual translation (AVT) mode of voice-over as a resource in foreign language (FL) education. The experimental design consisted of a didactic intervention in which students had to complete six voice-over-based lesson plans in which they had to create their own voice-over versions of six pre-selected short video extracts. The lesson plans were designed bearing in mind the importance of developing integrated skills and linguistic mediation. The nature of the study is mixed, since quantitative and qualitative variables have been considered to triangulate the perception of the participants with the data obtained from proficiency tests of integrated skills. The main findings of this study point towards a series of benefits of using didactic voice-over and the results seem to converge towards an improvement of production skills. In addition, development of oral reception was also observed and, subsidiarily, there was also an improvement in digital skills and linguistic mediation. The conclusions are consistent with the very nature of performing voice-over and call for further research in the area.

Le projet d’innovation VOCAL (VOiCe-over and lAnguage Learning) a l’objectif d’évaluer le potentiel pédagogique de la modalité de traduction audiovisuelle (TAV) du voice-over dans l’enseignement des langues étrangères. Le modèle expérimental consiste en une intervention didactique structurée en six lesson plans (LPs), où les étudiant·e·s avaient à créer leurs propres versions en voice-over de six courts extraits vidéo présélectionnés. Les LPs ont été conçus en tenant compte de l’importance du développement des compétences intégrées et de la médiation linguistique. Il s’agit ici d’une étude mixte alliant des variables quantitatives et qualitatives, afin de recouper par triangulation la perception des participants avec les données obtenues à partir des tests de compétences intégrées. L’étude suggère de nombreux avantages à l’utilisation du voice-over didactique : les résultats semblent converger vers une amélioration des compétences de production, et en observant le développement de la réception orale, on note une amélioration des compétences numériques et de la médiation linguistique auprès des participants. Ces conclusions sont cohérentes avec la nature même des tâches de voice-over et appellent à de nouvelles recherches dans le domaine.

Resumen
El Proyecto de innovación VOCAL (VOCes superpuestas en el Aprendizaje de Lenguas) tiene el objetivo de evaluar el potencial pedagógico del uso de la modalidad de traducción audiovisual (TAV) de voces superpuestas o voice-over de modo activo como recurso en la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras. El diseño de investigación se ha basado en una intervención didáctica en la que el alumnado ha completado seis lesson plans (LPs) en las cuales debía crear su propia versión de voice-over de extractos breves de vídeo. Las LPs fueron concebidas teniendo en cuenta la importancia del desarrollo de habilidades y destrezas integradas, así como la mediación lingüística. La naturaleza del estudio es mixta, puesto que se han considerado variables cualitativas y cuantitativas para triangular la percepción de los participantes con los datos obtenidos de los tests de destrezas integradas. La conclusión principal confirma las ventajas del uso del voice-over didáctico, puesto que los resultados convergen en la mejora de las competencias de producción. Asimismo, se observa un desarrollo de la recepción oral y, además, un avance en competencias digitales y de mediación lingüística. Las conclusiones son coherentes con la propia naturaleza de las voces superpuestas y demandan más investigación en el campo.
