Traduction et révolution à l’époque de l’indépendance hispano-américaine

Résumé

Les historiens ont montré clairement l’influence de l’Indépendance des États-Unis et de la Révolution française sur le mouvement émancipateur en Amérique hispanique entre 1776 et 1810. Cette influence ne s’est cependant pas limitée aux seules idées qui ont façonné le mouvement indépendantiste dans les colonies espagnoles. On la trouve dans les textes fondamentaux des premières républiques hispano-américaines. L’objet de cette étude est de montrer que la présence de ces idées et de ces documents en territoire latino-américain, particulièrement au Venezuela, a été rendue possible par le truchement des traductions de Manuel García de Sena (les documents nord-américains), d’Antonio Nariño (la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et des citoyens de 1789) et de Juan Picornell (la Déclaration… de 1793). C’est par le biais de la comparaison des textes, de l’analyse des conditions de production et de réception des traductions que nous avons pu montrer non seulement la filiation idéologique des trois révolutions, mais également les transformations, linguistiques et notionnelles, subies par les textes nord-américains et français dans leur version espagnole. L’appropriation, démarche traductionnelle latino-américaine caractéristique (Bastin 1996, 1998), se manifeste à nouveau pour donner lieu à de nouveaux textes, autonomes. Nous soulignerons également la contribution intellectuelle et politique de ces traducteurs ainsi que, d’une manière générale, celle de la traduction à la diffusion des idées émancipatrices en Amérique latine à la fin du xviii^e siècle.

Abstract

Historians have clearly demonstrated the influence of the Independence of the United States and the French Revolution on the emancipation movement of the Hispanic American countries in the period between 1776 and 1810. This influence, however, is not restricted to the ideas that shaped the independence movement of the Spanish colonies. It is also present in the founding documents of the first Latin American republics. The purpose of this article is to show that the presence of these documents and ideas on Latin American soil, specially in Venezuela, was made possible by the translations of Manuel García de Sena (the North American documents), Antonio Nariño (The Declaration of the Rights of Man of 1789) and Juan Picornell (the Declaration of the Rights of Man of 1793). Comparing the texts and analyzing the conditions of production and reception of the documents we were able to establish the ideological link of the three revolutions and to identify the transformations worked by the translators, both conceptually and linguistically, in the Spanish translations. Once again we are dealing with the appropriation of the original texts, a characteristic of Latin-American translations (Bastin 1996, 1998), to conceive another independent document with a life of its own. Additionally, an emphasis is made on the political and intellectual contributions of both translators and translation to the dissemination of revolutionary ideas in eighteenth century Latin America.
