Résumé
Nous nous proposons de mettre en évidence l’écart créé entre le message d’un film documentaire décrivant les difficultés d’intégration d’immigrants pauvres en Israël et la version française réalisée pour la chaine Arte, en fonction d’une politique linguistique exigeant un français normatif, plus ou moins uniformisé.
Saint-Jean (1993) décrit la vie d’un village de caravanes du nord d’Israël à travers l’histoire personnelle de six immigrants de diverses origines. Leur accent, leur niveau d’hébreu, les fautes grammaticales, l’emploi simultané de plusieurs langues ou de mots empruntés témoignent notamment de leur capacité ou de leur degré d’adaptation à la société d’accueil mais aussi de leur ancienneté dans le pays.
Malgré la demande du traducteur d’indiquer ces caractéristiques linguistiques dans les sous-titres et dans les passages en voice over, ARTE a maintenu son exigence d’un français normatif. Quel est le prix à payer, au nom du principe d’acceptabilité ?

Abstract
Our study case aims at showing the gap between the message given by a documentary film about problems of integration of poor immigrants in Israel, and the French version produced by the French-German TV channel Arte according to a certain language policy requiring a standardized French.
“St. Jean/Sandjin” (1993) tells us the stories of six immigrants, coming from different countries. Their ability to adapt to the new society is mirrored in their accent, their command of Hebrew, their grammatical mistakes, their simultaneous use of several languages or words borrowed from different languages.
The translator insisted on indicating these linguistic features in the subtitles and in the voice over but Arte strongly requested a standardized French. Isn’t the strict application of the acceptability principle a way to alter the meanning of the documentary?
