Abstract

David Pearson’s 2011 work Books as History successfully argues for the study of the book as an historical actor and agent. He emphasizes that a book’s design, type, binding, and more can tell us much about the era in which a book was produced and the pressures or tensions to which it was responding. His 2021 monograph, Book Ownership in Stuart England, allows Pearson to expand on these themes by examining characteristics of book use, ownership, and circulation during a significant period of British history. Both works are situated within the ongoing debate about the book’s future in an age of digitization, in which Pearson’s framework for understanding books as material and historical actors proves a timely corrective to predictions of print’s obsolescence.

Résumé

Dans son ouvrage de 2011 intitulé Books as History, David Pearson défend avec brio l’étude du livre en tant qu’acteur historique et en tant qu’agent. Il souligne que la conception graphique, la typographie, la reliure et bien d’autres aspects d’un livre peuvent nous en apprendre beaucoup sur l’époque à laquelle il a été produit et sur les pressions ou les tensions auxquelles il répondait. Sa monographie de 2021, Book Ownership in Stuart England, permet à Pearson d’approfondir ces thèmes en examinant les caractéristiques de l’usage, de la propriété et de la circulation des livres au cours d’une période importante de l’histoire britannique. Ces deux ouvrages s’inscrivent dans le débat actuel sur l’avenir du livre à l’ère de la numérisation dans la mesure où le cadre conceptuel proposé par Pearson pour appréhender les livres comme des acteurs matériels et historiques s’avère être une correction opportune aux prédictions annonçant l’obsolescence de l’imprimé.
