Abstract
In this essay, the author reviews G. Thomas Tanselle’s Descriptive Bibliography (2020), a retrospective collection of essays by the influential scholar and editor who defines key concepts of descriptive bibliography while providing a methodological approach to topics including format, paper, typography and bindings of books from a range of historical periods. St. Onge singles out Tanselle’s innovations in the description of publishers’ bindings and dust jackets and identifies the essay “Format” as being representative in demonstrating Tanselle’s rigorous standards. Written over the course of several decades, some of the essays are dated, but overall, Tanselle’s work is well placed to inform the work of scholars seeking to expand the scope of descriptive bibliography, traditionally Anglo-American in focus. St. Onge concludes the review by considering the future of descriptive bibliography as a discipline.

Cet article est un compte rendu du livre Descriptive Bibliography (2020) de G. Thomas Tanselle — une série d’articles rédigés par un chercheur et un éditeur influent. Tanselle y définit les concept‑clés de la bibliographie matérielle et esquisse son approche méthodologique d’objets objets tels le format, le papier, la typographie et la reliure des livres à travers différentes époques. St. Onge souligne l’importance des innovations que Tanselle a apportés à la description des reliures et des jaquettes du xixe et xxe siècles ; elle signale que l’article « Format » illustre bien l’approche rigoureuse de Tanselle. Rédigés au cours de plusieurs décennies, les articles de Tanselle sont parfois datés. Ses travaux sont néanmoins bien placés pour contribuer aux efforts des chercheurs et chercheuses qui visent à élargir la portée de la bibliographie matérielle, approche née d’une perspective très anglo-américaine. St. Onge termine son compte rendu en réfléchissant à l’avenir de la bibliographie matérielle en tant que discipline.
