Résumé

Cet article s’intéresse au rôle de la critique dans la découvrabilité des zines, publications alternatives circulant dans les marges de l’institution éditoriale. M’appuyant sur mon expérience en tant que rédacteur en chef du périodique Zine de zines, j’interroge différentes théories de la critique – qu’elle soit savante ou journalistique – et puise dans l’histoire de la critique de zines – en particulier en analysant le « métazine » Factsheet Five (1982‑1998) – pour nourrir une réflexion sur le rôle joué et les formes prises par la critique de zines. S’y révèle une fonction de définition de la pratique et du cadre social et culturel dans lequel elle se déploie rarement attribuée à la critique littéraire ou artistique. La spécificité du contexte des zines, une position marginale et tendue à l’intérieur du champ culturel, implique ainsi une critique à la fois tournée vers la circulation et la découvrabilité des zines et soucieuse des risques associés à une plus grande visibilité.

Abstract

This paper explores the role of criticism in the discoverability of zines, alternative publications operating in the margins of the publishing field. Building on my own experience as chief editor of Zine de zines, a serial zine covering zine culture in Quebec, I draw from various theories of criticism—either scholarly or journalistic—and from the history of zine criticism—with a focus on the “metazine” entitled Factsheet Five (1982–1998)—to analyse the functions and forms of zine criticism. The case of zines highlights an important role played by criticism rarely considered in literary or art criticism, that of defining a practice and the social and cultural environment in which it is deployed. The specificity of the zine context, a marginal and at times conflictual position within the cultural field, thus implies a critique focussed on the dissemination and the discoverability of zines, while also remaining aware of the risks associated with greater visibility.
