La découvrabilité et l’écosystème du livre : vers une nouvelle conceptualisation du système‑livre Discoverability and the Book Eco-system: Towards a new conceptualization of the book system

Résumé

Le concept de la découvrabilité suscite un intérêt croissant dans les sphères politiques, universitaires et professionnelles, en réponse aux transformations induites par la numérisation, l’intelligence artificielle (IA) et la plateformisation des milieux culturels. Pourtant, peu de travaux l’ont abordé sous un angle théorique, en particulier dans le secteur du livre. Cet article propose une conceptualisation approfondie de la découvrabilité en retraçant son origine et son évolution, puis en analysant ses enjeux dans le milieu éditorial contemporain. Il défend l’idée que la découverte des oeuvres, notamment en ligne, ne se réduit pas à une question de visibilité, de métadonnées ou de marketing : il s’agit d’un phénomène structurant qui façonne la création, la distribution et la consommation/réception des livres. Pour appréhender cette dynamique, l’article introduit une nouvelle approche, « l’écosystème du livre », qui non seulement revisite le système‑livre tel qu’il a été théorisé jusqu’à maintenant, mais propose également d’analyser la découvrabilité à travers trois dimensions interconnectées : les pressions régulatrices, les cycles de vie du livre et la translation, cette dernière mettant en lumière le rôle central des processus de curation, de valorisation et de prescription dans le potentiel de découverte des oeuvres.

Abstract

The concept of discoverability is attracting growing interest in political, academic, and professional spheres, in response to the transformations brought about by digitization, artificial intelligence (AI), and the platformization of cultural industries. However, few studies have approached it from a theoretical perspective, particularly in the book sector. This article therefore proposes an in‑depth conceptualization of discoverability by tracing its origins and evolution, and by analyzing its stakes in the contemporary publishing environment. It argues that the discovery of works, especially online, cannot be reduced to issues of visibility, metadata, or digital marketing; rather, it is a structuring phenomenon that shapes the creation, distribution, and reception/consumption of books. To grasp this dynamic, the article introduces a new approach, the “book ecosystem,” which revisits the book system as it has been theorized so far and proposes to analyze discoverability through three interconnected dimensions: regulatory pressures, book life cycles, and translation—the latter highlighting the central role of curation, valorization, and prescription processes in the potential discovery of works.
