L’analyse comparée d’un spectacle photographique de Gustave Marissiaux intitulé La Houillère (1905) et d’un film produit par Pathé la même année et consacré à l’univers minier (Au pays noir, de Lucien Nonguet et Ferdinand Zecca) montre non seulement que le clivage des supports de projection correspond nettement à un clivage social, mais aussi que ce clivage est esthétique : le réalisme photographique du documentaire industriel est aux antipodes du réalisme social – mais théâtral – du drame cinématographique. Néanmoins, ce constat permet de revoir l’histoire du cinéma minier des premiers temps (jusqu’à Germinal d’André Capellani, 1913) comme une intégration progressive du réalisme photographique et du réalisme social.
Abstract
A comparison of two works intended for projection—a photographic show by Gustave Marissiaux titled La Houillère and a film by Lucien Nonguet and Ferdinand Zecca, Au pays noir, both about coal mine working conditions and released in 1905—shows that the division between these two media corresponds to a division that is both social and aesthetic. The photographic realism of the industrial documentary is diametrically opposed to the social, but theatrical, realism of the fiction film. We can therefore recast the story of early mining films (until André Capellani’s Germinal, 1913) as a gradual integration of photographic and social realism.
