Grandeur et déclin d’une science au service de l’Église Sociographie et sociologie religieuses au Québec (1945-1970)

Résumé

Le présent article s’intéresse aux travaux des sociologues catholiques québécois dans les années 1950 et 1960. Dans la première partie, nous insistons sur le caractère ancillaire de la sociologie par rapport à l’institution religieuse. Dans la deuxième partie, nous nous penchons sur les enquêtes lancées à l’occasion de la mise sur pied des « Grandes Missions » régionales. Enfin, dans la dernière partie, nous entendons relever certains motifs de résistances et d’indifférence croissante du clergé envers la sociologie religieuse. Ce faisant, nous espérons offrir une lorgnette différente pour appréhender l’essor des sciences sociales au Québec.

Abstract

This article focuses on the work of Quebec Catholic sociologists in the 1950s and 1960. In the first part, we underscore the ancillary nature of sociology in relation to the religious institution. In the second part, we revisit the fieldworks launched on the occasion of the organization of “Great Missions” in various Quebec regions. In the last part, we address some of the motivations behind the reluctance and growing indifference of the clergy to religious sociology. In doing so, we hope to offer a different perspective to comprehend the development of social sciences in Quebec.
