Homère entre allégorie et fiction Homer : Between Allegory and Fiction

Résumé

À partir de la question de la réception d’Homère au moment de la Querelle d’Homère en France, et en particulier d’une dispute entre Anne Dacier et Houdar de La Motte, on construit une interrogation plus générale sur les rapports entre allégorie et fiction, autrement dit entre sens et représentation fictive de la présence. Plus spécifiquement, on montre comment la tentation de la lecture allégorique peut dissimuler un autre paradigme de réception fondé sur la présentification de l’absence, en particulier de l’absence du corps auctorial. On propose alors une nouvelle vision, inversée, de l’allégorie, où ce n’est plus le thème qui découle du phore, mais bien le phore qui permet d’accéder au thème.

Abstract

Starting with the question of the reception of Homer during the Quarrel of Homer in France, which notably pitted Anne Dacier against Houdar de La Motte, a more general inquiry is constructed concerning the relationship between allegory and fiction, in other words, between meaning and the fictive representation of presence. More specifically, it is demonstrated how the temptation of allegorical reading can conceal another paradigm of reception based on the presentification of absence, especially the absence of the authorial body. A new, inverted vision of allegory is then proposed, where it is no longer the theme that follows from the vehicle, but rather the vehicle that allows access to the theme.
