Résumé

Mon propos consiste ici à envisager les tenants et aboutissants d’une hypothèse aux termes de laquelle la pensée et tous les discours qui s’en réclament (dont la philosophie) résulteraient de la scission originaire d’avec le récit. Récit qui, selon l’hypothèse de Vernant, abritait en son sein à une époque mythique (présocratique) non seulement l’histoire des dieux et des héros mais les ingrédients nécessaires à l’élaboration d’un discours scientifique et même philosophique. Cette hypothèse comporte deux faces que j’examine successivement : d’abord la trame du récit est un composé indistinct de pensée et de narration ; ensuite, et surtout, la pensée conserve toujours la trace, plus ou moins visible, de cette origine narrative. Se pose alors la question de savoir si cette dette consubstantielle est de quelque conséquence sur la nature et la pertinence de ses propositions.

Abstract

My goal here is to look at the pros and cons of one hypothesis according to which all thinking and expression (including philosophy) broke away from the initial Tale. That tale, according to Vernant, used to harbour in its mythical (pre-Socratic) source not only the history of gods and heroes but also those ingredients required for scientific, and even philosophical, discourse. I delve into the two components of this hypothesis. I begin with the unstructured meshing of thought and narrative that underlies tales. Then, and foremost, I seek to determine whether thought still shows traces, however faint, of its narrative origin. One can then wonder if this consubstantial debt has any bearing on the nature and relevancy of its propositions.
