À l’été 1880, huit Inuit du nord du Labrador acceptent de partir pour l’Europe où, contre rémunération, ils exhiberont leurs personnes et leur culture devant le public de grandes villes. Leur recruteur, le Norvégien Johan Adrian Jacobsen, profite de son séjour à Hebron et dans le fjord de Nachvak pour recueillir dans les sépultures une collection d’artefacts qu’il expose avec les Inuit. Malheureusement, aucun des Inuit ne reverra sa terre natale, le groupe ayant été anéanti par la variole moins de quatre mois après son arrivée en Europe. En 2014, la publication du livre Sur les traces d’Abraham Ulrikab dévoile la présence, dans les collections de musées français et allemands, non seulement des restes humains des Inuit, mais aussi d’un ensemble d’artefacts assemblé par Jacobsen, ainsi que de divers objets ayant appartenus aux Inuit. Ce texte vise à actualiser la nature des objets, l’historique de leur collecte et leur acquisition par les musées européens.

Abstract

In the summer of 1880, eight Inuit from northern Labrador agreed to travel to Europe where, in exchange for payment, they were to exhibit themselves and their culture to the public of large cities. Their recruiter, the Norwegian Johan Adrian Jacobsen, took advantage of his stay in Hebron and Nachvak Fjord to collect a series of grave artifacts, which he exhibited with the Inuit. Unfortunately, none of the Inuit returned to their native land. Smallpox wiped out all of them less than four months after their arrival on European soil. In 2014 publication of the book In the Footsteps of Abraham Ulrikab revealed that French and German museum collections contain not only the human remains of the Inuit but also a set of artifacts assembled by Jacobsen and various objects that belonged to the Inuit. This article is intended to be an update on the nature of the objects and how the European museums collected and acquired them.
