Résumé
« L’homme n’est peut-être que le monstre de la femme, ou la femme le monstre de l’homme » : l’aphorisme de Mademoiselle de l’Espinasse dans Le rêve de d’Alembert exprime de façon lapidaire la différence sexuelle au moyen du monstre et du chiasme. Pour Diderot, la monstruosité est avec ses écarts le principe créateur d’une matière active toujours en transformation. Elle apporte de ce fait une perspective transformiste à la différence sexuelle, et en indique la nature instable et précaire. L’utilisation rhétorique du chiasme, avec sa structure en croix, établit d’autre part un rapport d’égalité entre les deux membres de la phrase, suggérant que les places occupées par l’homme et la femme sont réversibles et interchangeables. L’explication scientifique que Bordeu donne du chiasme par la suite est basée sur l’aspect physiologique de la différence sexuelle. Il la réduit d’abord à une question topologique, à savoir l’inversion anatomique des organes féminins et masculins, qui reprend et renforce l’idée d’interchangeabilité introduite avec la forme du chiasme. Bordeu introduit ensuite la notion quelque peu énigmatique d’un hermaphrodisme initial, qui serait visible dans les rudiments d’organes laissés par chaque sexe dans l’autre sexe. L’hermaphrodisme chez Diderot a la particularité d’être réactivable : la « vulve faufilée » chez l’homme, comme « l’orifice d’un canal qui s’est fermé » chez la femme, pourraient bien se rouvrir. Pour Diderot, la sexualité n’est à aucun moment chose fixe, et les conformations sexuelles ne sont que des instances topographiques transformables et interchangeables.
Abstract
Mademoiselle de l’Espinasse defines sexual difference in one of the most enigmatic aphorisms of D’Alembert’s Dream: “Man may only be the monster of the woman, or woman the monster of the man.” We will first consider Diderot’s conception of the monster as the creative principle of an active matter still in transformation. Applied to the question of sexual difference, monstrosity would then imply a transformationalist view of sexual difference, underlining its precarious nature. The rhetorical use of chiasmus, a structural criss-crossing, establishes an egalitarian relationship between the two parts of the sentence, suggesting that the places occupied by man and woman are reversible and interchangeable. Bordeu, a celebrated doctor and philosopher of the Enlightment, later volonteers to give a scientific explanation of this chiasmus, based on the physiological aspect of sexual difference. He first reduces it to a topological question, that is the anatomical inversion of male and female organs, reinforcing the idea of interchangeability introduced by the rhetorical criss-crossing. Bordeu presents the somewhat enigmatic notion of an initial fetal hermaphrodism, evidenced by the fact that the rudimentary organs of each sex contain a sugestion of the other. As we will see, hermaphrodism in Diderot has the possibility of being reactivated, and thus defines sexual difference through its physical attributes as transformable and interchangeable topological states, rather than as a fixed assignment of gender.
