Résumé
Dans les écrits du groupe d’écrivains romantiques haïtiens qu’on a appelé l’« école de 1836 », la question des rapports de la croyance à la science fait l’objet d’un traitement ambigu : d’un côté, ces écrivains associent la modernité scientifique à une forme de désenchantement du monde ; mais de l’autre, ils reconnaissent le rôle politique des croyances dans le processus d’émancipation qu’a constitué la Révolution haïtienne. En se replongeant dans ces débats, cet article cherche à retracer une généalogie littéraire et critique du concept de « neutralité axiologique », lié à celui de « désenchantement du monde » chez Max Weber.

Abstract
In the writings of the group of Haitian Romantic writers known as the « School of 1836 », the question of the relationship between belief and science is treated ambiguously : on the one hand, these writers associate scientific modernity with a form of disenchantment of the world ; on the other, they recognize the political dimension of belief in the process of emancipation constituted by the Haitian Revolution. By re-engaging with these debates, this article seeks to trace a literary and critical genealogy of the concept of « axiological neutrality », linked to that of Max Weber’s « disenchantment of the world ».
