Résumé
Cette étude porte sur la contestation de l’internationalisme et l’émergence du néo-continentalisme dans la politique du Canada à l’égard des Amériques. Nous démontrons que la formulation de la stratégie des Amériques du gouvernement de Stephen Harper est restée assez proche de la tradition internationaliste du Canada. Cependant, le néo-continentalisme, expression extérieure du néoconservatisme canadien, a façonné la mise en oeuvre de la stratégie des Amériques. L’influence du néo-continentalisme transparaît dans le rôle du Canada en matière de promotion de la démocratie, d’intégration économique et de sécurité.

Abstract
This study examines opposition to internationalization and the emergence of neocontinentalism in Canada’s policy toward the Americas. We demonstrate that the formulation of the Stephen Harper government’s Americas strategy did not stray far from Canada’s internationalist tradition. However, neocontinentalism, an external expression of Canadian neoconservatism, has shaped the implementation of the Americas strategy. The influence of neocontinentalism is reflected in Canada’s role in promoting democracy, economic integration, and security.

Resumen
Este estudio examina el rechazo al internacionalismo y el surgimiento del neocontinentalismo en la política de Canadá con respecto a las Américas. Demostramos que la formulación de la estrategia para las Américas del gobierno de Stephen Harper se ha mantenido bastante cercana a la tradición internacionalista de Canadá. Sin embargo, el neocontinentalismo, una expresión externa del neoconservadurismo canadiense, ha dado forma a la implementación de la estrategia de las Américas. La influencia del neocontinentalismo se refleja en el papel de Canadá en materia de promoción de la democracia, integración económica y seguridad.
