Utilisation des langues chez des couples interculturels à Hong Kong : quels impacts sur les constructions identitaires?

Résumé

Partant du contexte d’une des régions administratives spéciales de la République populaire de Chine, Hong Kong, cette étude s’intéresse aux constructions identitaires de trois couples interculturels ayant recours à une lingua franca (l’anglais mais aussi d’autres langues) pour communiquer au quotidien. Ce contexte, peu étudié, peut apporter de nouvelles pistes dans l’étude des relations intimes interculturelles. La recherche est fondée sur une approche antiessentialiste, mais constructionniste de l’identité, qui permet de faire émerger certains malentendus et jeux identitaires dans les discours des couples.

Abstract

This paper examines the construction of identities of three intercultural couples who share English as a lingua franca (but also other languages) in their day-to-day communication in Hong Kong, one of China’s Special Administrative Regions. I argue that this type of language contact, to date insufficiently studied, can generate new ways of looking at intimate intercultural relationships. The study is based on an anti-essentialist but constructionist understanding of identity, that allows bringing out a number of misunderstandings and identity games present in the couples’ discourses.
