Les études ethnologiques de tenure foncière laissent en général de côté le concept de « lieu » perçu comme un espace vécu pour se consacrer principalement aux droits de propriété conçus comme des segments hiérarchisés à l’intérieur d’un régime foncier. Cependant, ces catégories de jure peuvent être artificielles et mal s’accorder aux modes de comportement qui se manifestent dans l’organisation des droits d’accès à la terre. Cet article traite de la tenure foncière traditionnelle à partir d’une interprétation des signes qui sous-tendent l’enracinement dans les lieux. L’espace, pour les gens de Longana dans l’île d’Aoba, au Nord du Vanuatu, c’est d’abord un lieu. À partir de cette idée, je définis la signification de lieux habités et j’avance comme hypothèse centrale que les signes que les gens affichent dans leur interaction avec leur univers social et physique peuvent avoir une importance plus grande que ne l’ont les principes de parenté et de filiation pour la transmission du contrôle foncier. Ce type d’approche apporte une dimension nouvelle à l’étude de la tenure foncière traditionnelle : la terre n’est plus ici un simple contexte passif, mais elle foisonne au contraire de significations que les hommes ont créées en s’appropriant le monde.
Abstract
Ethnological studies concerned with land tenure usually overlook the concept of place as a lived-in space, concentrating instead on property rights, conceived as hierarchized segments inside a land tenure system. However, these de jure categories can be artificial and don’t necessarily coincide with the patterns of behavior associated with the organization of rights of access to land. This paper deals with traditional land tenure seen from the interpretation of underlying signs as they take root in given places. Space, for the people of Longana, located in the island of Aoba in the north of Vanuatu, is first of all a place. From this idea, I define the meaning of inhabited places and I put forward the hypothesis that the signs used by people in their interaction with the social and physical universe may have a greater importance than the kinship and filiation principles associated with transmission of tenure control. This type of approach brings a new dimension to the study of traditional land tenure: land is no more a simple passive context but, on the contrary, it is a rich complex meaning created by people in their appropriation of the world.
