On Commissioning New Music for Baroque Cello Commander de nouvelles oeuvres pour violoncelle baroque

Abstract

In 2014, cellist Elinor Frey began commissioning new music for the five-string Baroque cello as a way to contribute to and expand the repertoire for the instrument. Her project grew to three new works for five-string cello, two works for the four-string cello, and one for cello and harpsichord. This article documents Frey’s close collaborations with six composers—Scott Godin, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Linda Catlin Smith, Maxime McKinley, Ken Ueno, and Lisa Streich—and reflects upon the ways in which her approaches to style and performance practice played a role in interpreting the new works. Frey also explores how she drew inspiration from Baroque stylistic qualities such as concealment and illusion.

En 2014, la violoncelliste Elinor Frey a commencé à commander des oeuvres pour violoncelle baroque à cinq cordes, afin de contribuer au développement du répertoire pour cet instrument. Son projet s’est ensuite élargi avec trois nouvelles oeuvres pour violoncelle à cinq cordes, deux oeuvres pour violoncelle à quatre cordes, et une pour violoncelle et clavecin. Cet article documente l’étroite collaboration de Frey avec six compositeurs – Scott Godin, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Linda Catlin Smith, Maxime McKinley, Ken Ueno et Lisa Streich – et réfléchit à la façon dont ses approches du style et de la pratique de l’interprétation ont joué un rôle dans l’interprétation des nouvelles oeuvres. Frey explore également comment elle s’est inspirée de qualités stylistiques baroques telles que la dissimulation et l’illusion.
