Cet article décrit et analyse la création du Colonial Film Unit (CFU) par le gouvernement britannique au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le CFU était chargé de gérer la production et la distribution des films éducatifs dans les colonies britanniques. Afin de replacer le système colonial de projection cinématographique dans le contexte du cinéma éducatif britannique, ce texte présente les principales caractéristiques des expériences qui ont influencé la création du CFU (Nigeria Health Propaganda et Bantu Educational Cinema Experiment). Enfin, il souligne les aspects novateurs des réseaux mis en place en Gold Coast, en décrivant la place du cinema van et de l’Interpreter dans le système colonial de propagande cinématographique et en analysant comment ce dispositif de projection structure de manière très spécifique l’activité des spectateurs.

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes the founding of the Colonial Film Unit (CFU) by the British government at the outset of the Second World War. The CFU’s mandate was to manage the production and distribution of educational films in the British colonies. In order to situate the colonial system of film screenings in the context of British educational cinema, the author introduces the main features of the experiments which influenced the founding of the CFU—the Nigeria Health Propaganda project and the Bantu Educational Cinema Experiment. He then highlights the innovative aspects of the network established in Gold Coast through a description of the role of the Cinema Van, interpreting it in the system of colonial film propaganda and examining how this manner of screening films structured viewers’activity in a highly specific manner.
