Résumé

Le fait que Johan van der Keuken ait été photographe avant d’être cinéaste et qu’il n’ait cessé de pratiquer la photographie, en particulier dans la dernière partie de sa vie, nous invite à réfléchir aux rapports de l’image fixe et de l’image en mouvement au sein même de sa photographie, du point de vue de leurs potentialités cinématiques. L’exploration des photographies dans le détail de leur composition, des personnages qui y figurent, et leur confrontation entre elles, met cependant en évidence que ces trois photos-là sont un arrêt sur image d’un monde immobile. Ce tryptique apparaît ainsi comme une réflexion sur la mort, sur le passage du monde des vivants à un au-delà où le cinéaste occupe la place de celui qui a déjà franchi ce seuil. Dans un deuxième temps, l’article étudie les conditions d’entrée de van der Keuken, à l’âge de 17 ans, dans le champ artistique. Un critique de la revue Camera le repère en effet à cette époque en même temps que deux autres photographes, et le considère d’emblée comme un photographe inclassable, tout en s’avouant incapable d’en parler. La rupture que van der Keuken opère et qu’il poursuivra par le moyen du film se comprend dès lors par rapport à la tendance dominante de la photographie à cette époque, que la grande exposition de Steichen, « The Family of Man », incarne. En un sens, l’oeuvre ultérieure de van der Keuken est le lieu d’une polémique où le photographe s’interroge par rapport à l’humanisme de cette exposition — dont Barthes avait pointé l’idéologie dans ses Mythologies —, polémique qui l’amènera à prendre position sur le plan politique.

Abstract

The fact that Johan van der Keuken was a photographer before becoming a filmmaker and that he never stopped practising photography, particularly late in life, invites us to think about the relationship between still and moving images in his photographs from the point of view of their cinematic potential. Nevertheless, an exploration of the detail of the compositions of these three photographs, the people who appear in them and their interaction amongst themselves, reveals that these images are those of an immobile world. This triptych thus appears to be a reflection on death, on the passage from the world of the living to a beyond, in which the filmmaker occupies the place of someone who has already crossed this threshold. In addition, this article will study the conditions under which van der Keuken, at the age of 17, entered the art field. A critic for the magazine Camera took notice of him at this time, along with two other photographers, and saw him as an unclassifiable photographer even at that early date, declaring himself unable to talk about his work. Van der Keuken’s innovation, which he pursued in the cinema, was seen as a break with the dominant tradition of photography at the time, embodied by the great “Family of Man” exhibition by Steichen. In a sense, van der Keuken’s later work was the site of a polemic in which he questioned this exhibition’s humanism—Barthes had pinpointed its ideology in Mythologies—leading him to take up a political stance.
