Résumé
Le mode de production agricole des paysans, dans les pays pauvres, est une forme de polyculture longtemps jugée désuète par les agriculteurs conventionnels et les gouvernements. Des chercheurs, dont plusieurs étaient des géographes, ont contribué à en établir la pertinence et à en montrer les fondements scientifiques. Le double avènement du développement durable et de l’agroécologie dans le dernier quart du XXe siècle a donné un nouvel élan à son acceptation. Cette agriculture porte maintenant le nom d’agriculture intercalaire. Ses caractéristiques écologiques, avantageuses au plan de la production alimentaire, ont récemment amené les Nations Unies à la déclarer « presque biologique » et particulièrement apte à résoudre le problème de la sous-alimentation en Afrique et dans le monde en développement en général.

Abstract
The method by which small-scale farmers produce food in poor countries is a form of polyculture long considered to be outmoded by so-called conventional farmers and governments. Researchers, several of them geographers, have contributed to demonstrating its role and scientific applications. The advent of sustainable development and agro-ecology in the last quarter of the 20th century gave it fresh impetus. This method of food production, currently referred to as intercropping agriculture on account of its ecological impact and its special contribution to food production, has led the United Nations to declare it, alongside biological agriculture, as being “nearly organic” and particularly appropriate for solving the food crisis in Africa and in the developing world at large.

Resumen
En los países pobres, el modo de producción agrícola del campesinado es un tipo de policultivo, desde hace tiempo juzgado en desuso por los gobernantes y agricultores convencionales. Investigadores, muchos de ellos geógrafos, han contribuido a establecer su pertinencia y mostrar sus fundamentos científicos. El doble suceso del desarrollo sostenido y de la agroecología, en el último cuarto del siglo XX, ha dado un nuevo impulso a la aceptación de este tipo de cultivo. Esta agricultura ahora lleva el nombre Agricultura Intercalaria. Sus características ecológicas, ventajosas en el plan de producción alimentaria, han permitido que las Naciones Unidas declare « casi biológicas » y particularmente aptas a resolver el problema de la desnutrición en África y en todo el mundo en desarrollo.
