Résumé
Selon Mitchell, le paysage ne serait pas un genre artistique mais bien un médium qui voilerait ou naturaliserait la violence inscrite dans le territoire par le regard et les gestes conquérants. Grâce à l’émergence de cet autre médium qu’est la photographie, qui sera bientôt en position dominante eu égard au paysage, il y aurait, à la fin du XIXe siècle, un possible retournement. Le paysage, compris comme médium, passerait alors d’instrument de violence à objet lui-même tyrannique. Ce texte examine la fonction opératoire de la photographie et de ses véhicules pour tenter de voir si, par leur assemblage, il y a une transformation dans la conception paysagère et, si c’est le cas, de quoi elle est faite et quels sont ses effets.

Abstract
According to Mitchell, landscape is not an artistic genre; it is a medium with the ability to mask or naturalize the violence etched into the land by the conqueror’s gaze or actions. The emergence of photography, soon to play a dominant role in the perception of landscape, precipitates a reversal at the end of the nineteenth century: landscape is henceforth transformed from an instrument of violence into an object that, in and of itself, is tyrannical. The goal of this paper is therefore to analyze the operational function of photography and its vehicles in an attempt to establish whether the combination of photography with vehicle actually altered the perception of landscape, and if so, how and with what repercussions?
