Genre, transgression et féminité dans La squaw blanche d’Emma Morrier

Résumé

Pionnière de la littérature francophone dans l’Ouest canadien, Marie-Joséphine Emma Morrier (née Gravel) est l’auteure de plusieurs pièces de théâtre dont la plus connue est sans doute Bon sang ne ment pas qui a été sélectionnée pour représenter l’Alberta à l’occasion de la 3^e édition du concours dramatique du Dominion en 1935 à Ottawa. Sous le pseudonyme de Madrina, Morrier a également signé un grand nombre de chroniques dans Le Patriote de l’Ouest puis dans La Survivance. Fait moins connu, Emma Morrier s’est essayée comme romancière. À l’aube de sa vie, elle compose un roman-feuilleton qui sera publié dans la page féminine du Droit, puis dans La Survivance sous le titre La squaw blanche. À notre connaissance, ce roman à caractère autobiographique n’a fait l’objet d’aucune étude critique. Le propos de cet article sera de combler ce manque en proposant une analyse du roman, attentive à la fois à la question de son genre et à la représentation qu’il propose de la féminité. Nous nous interrogerons en particulier sur la nature transgressive de ce récit de voyage qui met en scène un protagoniste féminin.

Abstract

A pioneer of western Canadian francophone literature, Marie-Joséphine Emma Morrier (née Gravel) was the author of a number of plays, of which the most famous is undoubtedly Bon Sang Ne Ment Pas, which was selected to represent Alberta on the occasion of the 3^rd Dominion Drama Festival in Ottawa in 1935. Under the pseudonym of Madrina, Morrier also signed a large number of editorials in Le patriote de l’Ouest and in La survivance. A less well-known fact is that Morrier also wrote a novel. Towards the end of her life, she composed a serialised novel entitled La squaw blanche that was published in the women’s section of Droit and then in La survivance. As far as can be ascertained, this biographical novel has never been the object of critical study. The purpose of this article will be to rectify this absence in proposing an analysis of the novel which is attentive both to the question of genre and the representation of femininity that it proposes. Particular attention will be paid to the transgressive nature of this travel narrative that depicts a feminine protagonist.
