Abstract
A U–Pb LA-ICP-MS zircon study was conducted on 22 rock samples from offshore southeastern Nova Scotia, Canada, to investigate the nature of the pre-Mesozoic basement and the provenance of the overlying syn-rift Late Triassic Eurydice Formation of the Scotian Basin. Detrital zircon signatures from five offshore basement metasedimentary samples were consistent with those of the Meguma terrane. Three granitoid samples yielded ca. 381–358 Ma crystallization ages, consistent with felsic plutons of the onshore Meguma terrane. These results confirm that the Meguma terrane underlies the Scotian Basin. An isotopically evolved granodiorite yielded a ca. 576 Ma crystallization age and is interpreted as basement to the Meguma terrane. Its temporal, isotopic, and geochemical similarities with igneous rocks of the Ouarzazate Group in the Anti-Atlas of Morocco suggest that the Meguma terrane likely initiated in a Cadomian back-arc basin of northwest Africa. Detrital zircon signatures from the Eurydice Formation suggest that the late Ediacaran–Ordovician Meguma Supergroup was its primary sediment source, and absence of Silurian to Devonian zircon ages suggests that the rift-related Rockville Notch Group of the northwestern part of the Meguma terrane was not a source and likely absent below the Scotian Basin. The Rockville Notch Group was previously interpreted to represent rifting between Gondwana and the Meguma terrane. We interpret the ca. 576 Ma granodiorite as representing rifting between Gondwana and the Meguma terrane, and the Rockville Notch Group as Silurian rifting of an outboard Cadomian arc from the Meguma terrane.

Résumé
Une étude U–Pb sur zircon par LA-ICP-MS a été menée sur 22 échantillons de roches prélevés au large du sud-est de la Nouvelle-Écosse, au Canada, afin de caractériser la nature du socle pré-mésozoïque et la provenance de la Formation d’Eurydice du Trias tardif, syn-rift et sus-jacente, du bassin Scotian. Les signatures des zircons détritiques de cinq échantillons métasédimentaires du socle au large sont similaires à celles du terrane de Meguma. Trois granitoïdes ont donné des âges de cristallisation compris entre ~381 et 358 Ma, compatibles avec ceux des plutons felsiques du terrane de Meguma à terre. Ces résultats confirment que le terrane de Meguma s’étend sous le bassin Scotian. Une granodiorite isotopiquement évoluée a livré un âge de cristallisation de ~576 Ma et est interprétée comme appartenant au socle du terrane de Meguma. Ses caractéristiques temporelles, isotopiques et géochimiques similaires à celles des roches ignées du Groupe d’Ouarzazate dans l’Anti-Atlas du Maroc suggèrent que le terrane de Meguma s’est probablement formé dans un bassin d’arrière-arc cadomien du nord-ouest de l’Afrique. Les signatures des zircons détritiques de la Formation d’Eurydice indiquent que le Supergroupe de Meguma de l'Édiacarien tardif–Ordovicien en a été la principale source de sédiments. L’absence de zircons d’âges siluriens à dévoniens suggère que le Groupe de Rockville Notch, présent dans la partie nord-ouest du terrane de Meguma et associé à un épisode de rifting, n’était pas une source de sédiments et est probablement absent sous le bassin Scotian. Le Groupe de Rockville Notch a précédemment été interprété comme représentant le rifting entre le Gondwana et le terrane de Meguma. Nous interprétons ici la granodiorite datée à ~576 Ma comme témoignant du rifting entre le Gondwana et le terrane de Meguma, et le Groupe de Rockville Notch comme l’expression d’un rifting silurien détachant un arc cadomien externe du terrane de Meguma.
