In this article, the author seeks to establish the central role, often passed over in silence, played by Father Clément Cormier in the history of the social sciences in Acadia, particularly in the founding of a School of Social Sciences within the Collège Saint-Joseph in Memramcook. In the winter of 1866 Prince Edward Island was swept by rumours of an attack by the Fenian Brotherhood, Irish American rebels intent on using an invasion of British North America to loosen Britain’s hold on Ireland. Unlike other parts of British North America, the handling of the Fenian Scare on Prince Edward Island had much less to do with Confederation than the local government’s ongoing campaign to suppress the Tenant League, a radical land reform movement, and its manipulation of sectarian discord for electoral gain – thus illustrating how transnational issues mutate through interaction with local issues.

In rural Nova Scotia, until the 1970s, charivaris followed certain marriages and occasionally other notable socio-cultural events (either contentious or praiseworthy). This tradition’s complex meaning helps to explain its persistence as part of the ongoing scrutiny and sanctioning of behaviour in rural communities. Its stated purpose as a "welcome," noise-invoking names, cacophonous ritual means, accompanying sexualized trickery, and rural location demonstrate that the event’s main concerns were with the reproduction of individuals and communities while placing the responsibility for this mainly upon women.

In 1970, several members of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party (NDP) formed a New Left/Trotskyist group within the party known as the New Brunswick Waffle. The NB Waffle gained significant strength within the NB NDP, eventually securing a victory for its radical manifesto, "For a Socialist New Brunswick," at a party convention in September 1971. A dispute, however, erupted over the legality of this victory, which led to a two-month split within the party that required intervention on the part of the federal NDP. By the end of 1971 the NB Waffle had itself fractured and collapsed.

The Scots appear to possess a particular flair for the creation, transmission, and mutation of myths, and while modern scholars have attempted to deconstruct such myths it is clear that they have been of substantial importance in the making of local and national identities. This article uses one Scottish emigrant to Nova Scotia as a test case. It unpicks the Galloway background of the Reverend John Sprott’s first four decades and the assembling of his cultural baggage, and it follows him for 50 years in his adopted homeland. A map of his mental journeyings is the result.

Louis J. Robichaud recognized at the time of his election as premier in 1960 that bureaucratic modernization was urgently needed to translate the political gains of the "Atlantic Revolution" into workable social and economic programs in New Brunswick. To provide leadership in civil service reform, Robichaud recruited seven ex-Saskatchewan Co-operative Commonwealth Federation bureaucrats who became known as the "Saskatchewan Mafia." This article uses their experiences to explore the bureaucratization of the Atlantic Revolution, and argues that this group played a crucial role in the transformation of New Brunswick’s political bureaucracy and thus in the modernization of the province as a whole.
