Abstract
A toddler, not quite two years old, records a 7’ 46” iPhone video. This “perfect” film (after Jørgen Leth’s “perfect” human) exposes the basic operations of smartphone thinking-feeling (Massumi). Drawing on haptic theories of filmic engagement (Marks, Sobchack), I examine how Nova’s camera returns, again and again, to rugs, throws, windows, chairs, and to the hardwood floor. Adult voices—mother, father, grandmother—provide a mundane soundtrack which offsets Nova’s systematic inquiry into medial visual perception. At the film’s center, a brief, surprisingly steady shot gathers the adults at the kitchen counter into a domestic “primal scene” that allows the child to come to terms with both closeness and distance: rather than simply tethering (Turkle) Nova to her parents, the phone works like a small “holding” device, in a Winnicottian sense. Finally, as Nova’s grandmother directs her to “take a picture of my flowers,” and before the phone is wrested from her, it becomes evident that Nova has developed a true method for seeing-being in the world.

Une enfant qui n’a pas encore deux ans enregistre une vidéo de 7:46 avec un iPhone. Ce « film parfait » (d’après l’« humain parfait » de Jørgen Leth) met au jour les opérations élémentaires d’un thinking-feeling (Massumi) propre au smartphone. En m’appuyant sur les théories haptiques de l’engagement filmique (Marks, Sobchack), j’examine comment la caméra de Nova revient, encore et encore, aux tapis, aux plaids, aux fenêtres, aux chaises et au plancher de bois franc. Les voix des adultes — mère, père, grand‑mère — forment une bande sonore du quotidien qui fait contrepoint à l’enquête systématique de Nova sur la perception visuelle médiale. Au centre du film, un plan bref et étonnamment stable rassemble les adultes au comptoir de la cuisine en une « scène originaire » domestique qui permet à l’enfant de composer avec la proximité et la distance : plutôt que d’« arrimer » (tether, Turkle) Nova à ses parents, le téléphone fonctionne comme un dispositif de holding, au sens winnicottien. Enfin, lorsque la grand‑mère de Nova lui demande de « prendre une photo de mes fleurs », et avant qu’on ne lui arrache le téléphone, il devient évident que Nova a élaboré une véritable méthode de voir‑être au monde.
