Central to the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) third assessment report, released in Shanghai in January 2001, was the statement:

"There is now new and stronger evidencethat most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities."This represents a significant strengthening of the analogous statement issued by the IPCC in 1996:

"The balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate"

In this article the scientific evidence leading up to these IPCC statements is reviewed. A historical perspective of the Earth's climate over the last 400,000 years is presented, as is the science of global warming over the last 200 years. The range of projections of climate change over the next century is also summarized giving particular emphasis to projections concerningCanada. The issue of uncertainty in climate change projections is tackled and the public confusion arising from the media portrayal of the science and its entry into the political arena discussed. Finally, The Kyoto Protocol and how it fits within the framework of necessary actions required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is reviewed.

Cela constitue un renforcementsignificatif d'une déclaration similairepubliée en 1996 par le GIEC : « Le bilandes preuves considérées porte à penserque le climat planétaire serait influencépar des causes d'origine humaine ».

Le présent article porte surl'ensemble des éléments de preuvescientifique sous-jacent aux déclarationsde ces deux déclarations du GIEC.Dans une perspective historique, on yprésente les fluctuations climatiques dela planète au cours des derniers 400 000ans, ainsi que les principales étapes dudéveloppement de la science duréchauffement au cours des derniers 200ans. On passe en revue la gamme desprojections des changements climatiquespour le prochain siècle, particulièrementen ce qui concerne le Canada.

Managing the environmental impacts of urbanization on watersheds is a major problem facing Canadian communities. Meeting this challenge requires that municipal planning departments have access to good quality environmental information allowing them to develop effective land use plans and remediation policies. Managing such problems demands an interdisciplinary approach involving a range of scientific disciplines including geology, geochemistry, sedimentology, hydrogeology, hydrology, geophysics and aquatic ecology.

Geoscientists from the University of Toronto and McMaster University are working with the City of Pickering, Ontario on remediation of a Lake Ontario lagoon and urbanized watershed (Frenchman's Bay) experiencing large stormwater flows and enhanced sediment erosion and transportation. Throughout the watershed, the hydrological cycle has been dramatically changed as a result of 'hardening' byroads and buildings - greatly restricting infiltration and promoting surface runoff. The urban-impacted watershed empties into the shallow, semi-enclosed coastal lagoon of Frenchman's Bay -serving as a trap for fine-grained contaminated sediment. A wide range of geophysical techniques have been employed in Frenchman's Bay lagoon to determine the geology of the lagoon, physical characteristics of bottom sediments and the distribution of contaminated sediment on its floor.

Letraitement de ce genre de problèmeexige que l'on adopte une approchemultidisciplinaire intégrant une gammede disciplines scientifiques, dont lagéologie, la géochimie, lasédimcntologie, l'hydrogéologie,l'hydrologie, la géophysique ainsi quel'hydro-écologie.

Des géoscientifiques del'Université de Toronto et de l'UniversitéMcMaster travaillent de concert avec la ville de Pickering (Ontario) à laréhabilitation d'une lagune du lacOntario et son bassin de drainageurbanisé (baie de Frenchman), lesquelssont soumis à de forts volumes d'eaux deruissellement et à une érosion et untransport sédimentaire accrus. Ces eaux de bassin dedrainage « urbanisé » se déversent dansla lagune côtière peu profonde et quasifermée de la baie de Frenchman,piégeant ainsi les sédiments à grainsfins contaminés. Un gamme étendue detechniques géophysiques ont été mises àprofit dans la lagune de la baie deFrenchman pour définir la géologie de lalagune, les caractéristiques physiques dessédiments du fond ainsi que ladistribution des sédiments contaminéssur le fond.

This paper combines the temporal model of caldera formation presented by Robert Smith and Roy Bailey in 1968 with recent volcanological concepts. Field examples, experimental models and theoretical studies are synthesized toillustrate the process of caldera collapse conceptually as a series of stages of eruption and deformation. During each stage, physical changes occur at the surface, within the underlying magma chamber, and within the subsiding block or blocks that lie between the surface and the top of the magma chamber. The stages are as follows: 1) magma chamber intrusion, 2) initial eruption, down sagging and the on set of subsidence, 3) main subsidence and eruption phase, 4) peripheral extension and eruption quiescence, 5) continued eruption, subsidence and change oferuptive style, and 6) resurgence and extrusion of lava domes and flows. These stages may then be repeated as a subsequent caldera cycle. Every caldera has an individual history and may deform in a different manner at each stage. The paper outlines how these stages can give rise to different caldera types.
